The Sarcastic Asshole
Survival Multiplayer goodness

So i got a Invite from Notch to play some Survival Multi Player sometime today, so i decided to go ahead and try it out. Login and put in the invite code and see whats up.

Not bad, a snow map  and actually people walking around (Instead of flailing around like an idiot.) and holding the items in their hands.  I was able to see items drop, gather them and drop therm and have people see what i was doing as-well, there wasn’t any animations for swinging your arms or hitting stuff or even mining just yet but hey it’s alpha what do you expect? It’s not even fully coded.

You can always do the basics and people will see you do what you do, gather some wood and snag some stuff. Eventually build something. Once in a while notch under a different name would come around or talk in the server in pink/purple text and let us know whats going on or to say hi or something, it wasn’t all bad and you couldn’t really tell there was lag either so it ran pretty smooth and i loved the fact the text has extra characters, is more smoother and you can type even longer! It has a pretty cool fading effect when a text message goes away too.

But as cool as it is to see people run around with you and mine shit, there is always some down sides… Now don’t get me wrong even though notch can make us puke out items like no tomorrow, doesn’t mean it’s all perfect. At some points you WILL get stuck on blocks or within blocks for no reason and you will twitch/respawn around until you start jumping like a mexican jumping bean trying to unstick yourself which also happens whenever you run/walk across minetracks, in which case the Minecarts do work but i don’t think others can see you ride in them but it still does the Twitching glitch when you ride it.

Another issue was massive black holes appearing, if you go into them or even walk on top of them you will trigger the stuttering glitch and be stuck until you glitchly fall down and die, or you type /home and respawn back to the spawn, but it’s probably just a generation bug overall.

While PvP wasn’t installed at the time and you aimlessly and hopelessly whacked at a body like it was a ghost, you could set people on fire if you really wanted to thats of course if they didn’t have Peaceful on or were near water. The difficulty slider was set to only be for an individual user, but since no mobs were represented into SMPB yet all it did was really regenerate health.

Another issue that came up was Furnaces were locked and you could put stuff in them but it wouldn’t do a damn thing, either not implanted or broken which basically meant no iron smelting. Rumour stated you could smelt shit with lava, but it was proved wrong in which lava does actually spawn as-well with Redstone dust. (Untested if redstone dust actually works or not)

So overall as buggy as it was, and with few FPS drops that came around it was alright to be honest the bugs involved weren’t too serious and probably either not implanted or fixed yet, i was mainly focusing on screenshots mainly the entire time instead of actually doing something. It was interesting to see that somehow someone managed to get TNT and blow the shit up at the spawn in the first level and everyone elses stuff, whilst EZ and Notch spat out random items as-well like Saddles and diamonds and such. It was also funny to see that a spiraling stair case up in the air started to leak water and spill across the land and into some caves, probably not the best idea that someone has to come up with but interesting for the server itself, also as a little side note chests and signs did work but were entirely client side meaning you could only see your contents in the chest and your writing on the signs.

Last i believe notch host’s the server and is doing so right now, even during the password leak incident and because all of these people are trying to connect i think it’s putting a bit much on his internet and ram usage. Good stuff though, good times, and good people. It just sucks that us original testers can’t get back in because the entire internet brought the party down, and actually i know that i’m probably holding back on a few things but some of the screenshots may explain a little more of what went on.

As bonus material i uploaded all the snapshots of SMP I made whether intentional or not into one giant .7z (Openable with 7-zip or winrar.) So enjoy them i guess.
